Choosing Brick for a Home

Choosing the type of brick for a home may depend somewhat on climate, but appearance is usually the ultimate concern. As bricks are heavy by nature, it may be much more economical to order from brick manufacturer close to the home’s construction site.

Most of the time the contractor, brick salesman, and homeowner work together to choose brick style ,color and texture. On some homes, a decorator or designer helps to pick out brick. The market offers a lot of different brick options varying in size, color and face (texture of the side of the brick facing out or visible).

Standard (modular), Queen and engineer are the typical brick sizes in residential construction. Brick colors can be viewed on manufacturers’ websites, but going to a distributor with a showroom floor helps for texture and actual appearance.

The main preference masons have on brick is the hardness, medium often the most desirable. Hard brick seem to be brittle and softer brick appear too porous. Most brick has a certain amount of clay, and different pigments are added and before firing in massive kiln. Sometimes the longer in firing, the harder the brick. Longer time in firing also affects color, as does the use of silicas, which affect both color and texture.
